The Australian Turf Club has been recognised for its pioneering use of mounted security.
The club has been given a “highly commended” for its horseback security patrols at the Australian Security Industry Association Limited (ASIAL) awards.
The ATC became the first in the Southern Hemisphere to use mounted security when it deployed patrols in 2010 to four racetracks including Randwick and Rosehill.
Team members receive practical training and formal qualifications in handling large crowds, weather and noise conditions and vehicle traffic.
“The ATC is the first organisation in Australia to implement mounted security,” ATC’s security and risk manager Shane Brady said.
“Deploying up to eight horses and riders per event, the ATC Mounted Security Section is an excellent deterrent against anti-social or criminal activity and generates extremely positive interaction with patrons.”
The ATC says mounted security allows it to aid in the rehabilitation and reeducation of thoroughbreds beyond their racing career.
The club was previously recognised for its use of mounted security at a national awards ceremony in 2010.
